Gay and Lesbian support for young people in Albany

AGAL has been successful in receiving funding from the Mental Health Commission of WA to run a support and social group for young LGBTIQ people in the Albany area.  The group will be meeting monthly with the aim to:

  • reduce social isolation
  • increase inclusion, and
  • a sense of belonging

The first meeting was earlier this year at headspace but if you missed out don’t worry! You can come and go as you please and all 12 – 25 year olds are always welcome.

At the firstsession we had a bit of a chat about future activities we might do (such as laser tag/bbq’s/go karts/arts and crafts/movie nights/roller derby/beach etc).

The group will be able to provide information regarding issues important to young LGBTIQ people such as mental health, coming out, self-harm and suicide, alcohol and other drug use and sexual health.  It will also promote useful life skills, such as effective coping strategies and communication skills.

The funding has allowed AGAL to fund a qualified social worker to run the group and headspace Albany will lend its support with another social worker to assist.
